The Moon

The Moon, of course, has been known since prehistoric times. It is the second brightest object in the sky after the Sun. As the Moon orbits around the Earth once per month, the angle between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun changes; we see this as the cycle of the Moon's phases. The time between successive new moons is 29.5 days (709 hours), slightly different from the Moon's orbital period (measured against the stars) since the Earth moves a significant distance in its orbit around the Sun in that time.
Due to its size and composition, the Moon is sometimes classified as a terrestrial "planet" along with Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.
The Moon was first visited by the Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 in 1959. It is the only extraterrestrial body to have been visited by humans. The first landing was on July 20, 1969 (do you remember where you were?); the last was in December 1972. The Moon is also the only body from which samples have been returned to Earth. In the summer of 1994, the Moon was very extensively mapped by the little spacecraft Clementine and again in 1999 by Lunar Prospector.
The gravitational forces between the Earth and the Moon cause some interesting effects. The most obvious is the tides. The Moon's gravitational attraction is stronger on the side of the Earth nearest to the Moon and weaker on the opposite side. Since the Earth, and particularly the oceans, is not perfectly rigid it is stretched out along the line toward the Moon. From our perspective on the Earth's surface we see two small bulges, one in the direction of the Moon and one directly opposite. The effect is much stronger in the ocean water than in the solid crust so the water bulges are higher. And because the Earth rotates much faster than the Moon moves in its orbit, the bulges move around the Earth about once a day giving two high tides per day.

Fast Food Facts

What is fast food and why is it so popular?

Fast food is any food that is quick, convenient, and usually inexpensive. You can buy fast food just about anywhere that sells food and snacks. Vending machines and drive-thru restaurants are probably the most common places to find fast food. It's so popular because for under $5.00 you can usually get a meal that's satisfying. But fast food is inexpensive because it is usually made with cheaper ingredients such as high fat meat and foods that contain lots of unhealthy fats (saturated and trans fats) and cholesterol, instead of nutritious foods such as lean meats, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

Is fast food bad?

There is no such thing as a "bad" food. All foods can fit into a healthy meal plan! It's true that fast food is usually high in fat, calories, cholesterol, and sodium, but eating fast food every once in a while is not going to cause you problems. If you eat too much fast food over a long period of time, though, it can lead to health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity.

Is some fast food healthier than others?

If you are having fast food more than once a week, try to make healthier choices. Here are some tips:

-Choose foods that are broiled over fried such as a grilled chicken sandwich instead of fried chicken or chicken nuggets.
-Choose soups that are not cream based.
-Have low-fat salad dressings instead of the full-fat kind.
-Have a salad or soup instead of fries.
-Use mustard or ketchup instead of mayonnaise.
-Order smaller entrée portions in general. For example: instead of a large sub, try a small sub with a side salad or piece of fruit.
-Order smalls instead of "super-sizing." A large fry has 540 calories and 26 grams of fat, but a small fry has about 60% less fat and calories (210 calories and 10 grams of fat).
-When ordering a sub or sandwich, select leaner meats like turkey or grilled chicken instead of fried items, like a burgers or steak and cheese sandwiches.
-Choose water, low-fat milk, or diet sodas instead of regular sodas, fruit drinks, and milkshakes.
-When ordering pizza, add veggies instead of meat. If fruit and veggies are available, try to add them into your meal. For example, have lettuce and tomato on sandwiches or burgers.

Where can I find nutrition facts about fast food?

You can check out your favorite fast food place or restaurant on the internet. You can find the company web site by doing a google search. Once you have found the web site, look for the "nutrition section". There is usually a link on the home page to the nutrition section where you will find nutrition facts, including fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein, calories, and more. Most companies have a web site which includes useful nutrition information. This will help you make good choices when eating out!

Remember: There are many healthy food choices that are easily available, tasty, and don't cost very much that can be eaten on the go. Try to balance fast food with other nutritious foods throughout the day and make healthier choices whenever possible. Many fast food restaurants have their nutrition information available on-site or on the internet; take a look at it to help you choose healthier options.

water

This article is about the chemical substance. For its chemical and physical properties, see water (molecule). For other uses, see Water (disambiguation).

Water in three states: liquid, solid (ice), and (invisible) vapor in air. Clouds are droplets of liquid, condensed from water vapor.
Water is a common chemical substance that is essential for the survival of all known forms of life. In typical usage, water refers only to its liquid form or state, but the substance also has a solid state, ice, and a gaseous state, water vapor or steam. About 1.460 petatonnes (Pt) (1021kilograms) of water covers 71% of the Earth's surface, mostly in oceans and other large water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation.[1] Saltwater oceans hold 97% of surface water, glaciers and polar ice caps 2.4%, and other land surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds 0.6%. A very small amount of the Earth's water is contained within water towers, biological bodies, manufactured products, and food stores. Other water is trapped in ice caps, glaciers, aquifers, or in lakes, sometimes providing fresh water for life on land.
Water moves continually through a cycle of evaporation or transpiration (evapotranspiration), precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Winds carry water vapor over land at the same rate as runoff into the sea, about 36 Tt (1012kilograms) per year. Over land, evaporation and transpiration contribute another 71 Tt per year to the precipitation of 107 Tt per year over land. Clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other life. However, in many parts of the world—especially developing countries—there is a water crisis, and it is estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability.[2] Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Approximately 70% of freshwater is consumed by agriculture

12 Affordable Ways To Good Health

#1 Sleep earlier. Here’s the reason for improving your sleeping habits: your body heals and repairs itself and does its regulatory job while you’re snoozing.

#2 Consider vitamin supplementation. If you’re not a good eater, you’ll be on your way to depleting your body of required vitamins and minerals.

#3 Eat more vegetables, cut down on red meat, caffeine, sugar and salt. Don’t forget too that by cutting out the junk, you’re saving money.

#4 Never skip breakfast.I used to be one of those breakfast skippers who would pile it on heavily in the evening. This is because I wasn’t hungry in the morning but terribly so at night.

#5 Never eat an incomplete meal.I’ve actually made an investment in my health by seeing a nutritionist on occasion to correct my lifelong wrongs when it came to food and diet.

#6 Don’t let yourself go hungry. It’s weird but I also learned that if you can be proactive and anticipate when you’ll be hungry, and actually eat something before you do, you’ll eat less, and better.
#7 Exercise, and at the very least, just walk. You need to move to burn those calories, to keep your body “oiled” and revving, and your metabolism humming just fine.

#8 Don’t stress out. Those health experts keep saying it: toxins are all over our environment invading our systems, but some of these things are just not within our control.

#9 Wash your hands often.Avoid getting sick by washing your hands often. Unless you don’t mind catching a bout of the cold or flu once in a while.

#10 Toss the vices. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. It’s something you just cannot “nag” someone to do.
#11 Think twice about joining weight loss programs. They could be a waste of time AND money.

#12 Visit your doctor for annual tests.

The Earth

Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Earth is the largest of the terrestrial planets in the Solar System in diameter, mass and density. It is also referred to as the World and Terra.
Home to millions of species, including humans, Earth is the only place in the universe where life is known to exist. Scientific evidence indicates that the planet formed 4.54 billion years ago,and life appeared on its surface within a billion years. Since then, Earth's biosphere has significantly altered the atmosphere and other abiotic conditions on the planet, enabling the proliferation of aerobic organisms as well as the formation of the ozone layer which, together with Earth's magnetic field, blocks harmful radiation, permitting life on land.
Earth's outer surface is divided into several rigid segments, or tectonic plates, that gradually migrate across the surface over periods of many millions of years. About 71% of the surface is covered with salt-water oceans, the remainder consisting of continents and islands; liquid water, necessary for all known life, is not known to exist on any other planet's surface. Earth's interior remains active, with a thick layer of relatively solid mantle, a liquid outer core that generates a magnetic field, and a solid iron inner core.
Earth interacts with other objects in outer space, including the Sun and the Moon. At present, Earth orbits the Sun once for every roughly 366.26 times it rotates about its axis. This length of time is a sidereal year, which is equal to 365.26 solar days. The Earth's axis of rotation is tilted 23.4° away from the perpendicular to its orbital plane, producing seasonal variations on the planet's surface with a period of one tropical year (365.24 solar days). Earth's only known natural satellite, the Moon, which began orbiting it about 4.53 billion years ago, provides ocean tides, stabilizes the axial tilt and gradually slows the planet's rotation. A cometary bombardment during the early history of the planet played a role in the formation of the oceans. Later, asteroid impacts caused significant changes to the surface environment.

Using "had done" in English

The "had done" form (or past perfect) is one of the least used tenses in English. We only really use it in the following situations.
* When it's important to say which event happened first in the past
* In reported speech
* To show regret about the past
* In conditional (if) sentences
Normally, when we say what happened in the past, we use the simple past or past continuous form.
For example, "He got up early to go to the beach. He spent all day there and went home as it was getting dark."
Sometimes, we need to explain which events happened before other ones (especially if we "jump" around in our story). When we need to show that one thing happened before another, we can use the past perfect form.
For example, "I was hungry, as I hadn't eaten all day." (Being hungry happened
after not eating all day.)
Compare these two sentences:
"When he got to the airport, the plane took off." (The plane took off after he arrived at the airport.)
"When he got to the airport, the plane had taken off." (The plane took off before he arrived at the airport.)
Reported speech
"I didn't see her," he said.
Because his words are in the past, when we report them we need to go one tense back and use the past perfect.
"He told me he hadn't seen her."
This is also the case if the words are in the present perfect.
"I have never been to Scotland."
She said that she had never been to Scotland.
To show regret
I wish I hadn't gone to the party. (But I went.)
If only she hadn't bought that car. (But she did.)
Conditional sentences (when we speculate about past events)
If I had worked harder, I would have passed the exam. (But I didn't work harder, so I failed.)
If you had told me, I could have helped. (But you didn't tell me, so I couldn't help.)
If they had left earlier, they might have caught the plane. (But they didn't leave
earlier, so they didn't get the plane.)

Reported Speech. Suggestions.

When we report suggestions,
we use:
Suggest + that + sb should...
Suggest + ing

“Why don’t we go to the cinema?”
“How about going to the cinema?”
“Shall we go to the cinema?”
“Let’s go to the cinema.”
He suggested that we should go to the cinema.
He suggested going to the cinema.

Reported Speech. Requests

When we report a request,
we use:
Ask / beg + sb + (not) to infinitive.

“Open the door, please.”
She asked me to open the door.

“Please, don’t tell her the truth.”
She begged Dave not to tell her the truth.

Reported Speech. Commands

When we report commands,
we use:

Tell / order + sb + (not) to infinitve.

Don’t eat in class”
He told me / ordered me not to eat in class.

Come here!

He told me / ordered me to go there.

Reported Speech. Questions

* Reported questions are introduced with verbs such as; ask, want to know, wonder.

* The verb changes to the affirmative form.

* The question mark (?) is omitted.

* In wh-questions, the question word is repeated in the indirect question.
Where does she go on Mondays?”
Craig asked me where she went on Mondays.

* When the question begins with an auxiliary verb or a modal verb, the indirect question begisn with if or whether.

Do you want a book?”
She asked me if / whether I wanted a book.

Reported Speech. Conditional Sentences

In conditional sentences type 1, we change the tenses.

“If I have time, I will talk to her.”
Sam said (that) if he had time, he would talk to her.

Conditional sentences type2 and 3 remain unchanged.

“If I did my homework, my teacher wouldn’t be angry with me.”
He said that if he did his homework, his teacher wouldn’t be angry with him.“

If I had been more careful, I wouldn’t have made mistakes.”
He said that if he had been more careful, he wouldn’t have made mistakes.

Before the test

1- Stay up-to-date on assignments. Learn material and review as you go along.
2- Make sure you understand the information as you are learning it. That way, you won't have to "re-learn" it OR have to "cram" a great deal of information at one time.
3- Read and study information in meaningful chunks (by chapters or units) so that you'll be able to "file" and "retrieve" information easily.
4- At the end of each chapter or unit, identify the information that was most important.Make up "flash cards" on this information that you can easily carry and use for study on a regular basis.
5- Analyze past tests to determine how you can improve test results.
6- Get the big picture. Ask the instructor about the test. Find out what information will be stressed and the kinds of questions that will be asked. Then go over your text and lecture notes to develop a study strategy. Map or outline the course contents if you haven't done so previously.
7- Before a test or exam, break study sessions into manageable time segments and meaningful units. You'll remember more if you study for short periods of time (45 minutes to 1 hour) and over a longer period of time (1-2 weeks) than if you cram all your study into a "binge" session the night before the test.
8- Practice answering essay questions BEFORE the test. Use cognitive questions at all levels to assure learning and ability to answer essay questions. For example: How would you describe, compare/contrast, predict, classify, apply, evaluate, prioritize, etc?
9- Use mnemonic techniques to memorize lists, definitions, and other specific kinds of information.
10- Form a study group with other students in your class to discuss and quiz each other on important material. This will add other perspectives and help to "complete" your study if you tend to be either a "detailed" or "big-picture" learner.
11- Maintain healthy living habits. Get a good night's sleep before the test.

Reported Speech. Other changes

Reported Speech. Tenses and Modal verbs

Reported Speech

We can use reported speech to report what people say.

Tom: “ I’m happy”

He says he is happy.
He said he was happy.

When the introductory verb (say, tell) is in the present, we can report what people say without changing the tense. When the introductory verb is in the past, the verbs have to be changed into a corresponding past tense.
